Needs and challenges:
We have an ag department and a great foods department- AND we have a greenhouse. We want to see our students growing food for the school. We have many farms in our area, so we'd like to see CSA's involved in our school. We want to serve less "fried flour" and more seasonal local organic vegetables and fruits. We want to see our curriculum linked to what we're doing to improve food. Optimally we would like to see everyone involved in our better food movement- staff, students, parents and the community. Our mission is to bring people together to work for better food in our city- because really, who can argue against better food for students?
Successes and achievements:
So far we've started a dialog between students and staff at our high school and we've pulled together a multi-year program for improving the food at our school.
We have set up a field trip to see Chef Ann Cooper in Berkeley, and we invited our campus catering department to go along, and they accepted. We have been working with the other high school in our area, and invited them to go too. We are working with ag, science and foods to try to pull together a program at our high school that will be sustainable. We are reaching out to farmers in our area, and we are asking local businesses for help.
